7 Ways to Honor Seniors on National Senior Citizens Day

National Senior Citizens Day is Friday, August 21st. At Home Senior Care recognizes the fantastic seniors in our community and says thank you for all you do and for the many contributions you have made to our society!

National Senior Citizens Day was first declared in 1988 when President Ronald Reagan set August 21st as a day to annually recognize the achievements of the more mature representatives of our nation. In his proclamation, he said:

“We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older-places in which older people can participate to the fullest and can find the encouragement, acceptance, assistance, and services they need to continue to lead lives of independence and dignity.”

We are exceptionally pleased for this national day of recognition, but truth be told, every day is a great day to show appreciation to a senior! Show support for our elder population by appreciating someone for their dedication, services, or accomplishments- letting another person know they matter is the greatest gift we can give to each other.

Here are a few of our favorite ideas from americansenioralliance.com on ways you can celebrate National Senior Citizens Day:

  • Plant a tree in a senior’s honor

  • Cook a meal to drop off for a senior neighbor or loved one

  • Donate in a senior’s honor to their church, or favorite organization

  • Make cards for the residents of a senior living facility, relatives, or neighbors

  • Offer to cut a senior’s lawn, or do other household chores

  • Interview seniors in your life and, through the experience, create a history project documenting the wisdom, “war stories,” and advice they share.

  • Volunteer for an assisted living facility or nursing home near you
